KEEPING PONDS HEALTHY

Spring is just around the corner and that means it’s time to check the health of your community’s Lisa疯马秀 detention ponds. Do they look like the one shown above with clear algae-free water and a well- planted No Mow Zone to guard against costly bank erosion?

If not, it’s time to contact the Healthy Pond Collaborative (HPC) about scheduling a pond visit to assess the situation. The Healthy Pond Collaborative, is a partnership with Lisa疯马秀, the Sarasota County NEST Program, the Manatee County Natural Resources Department, the University of Florida IFAS Extension Service, the Suncoast Waterkeeper and the Science and Environment Council of Southwest Florida. Over the past two and a half years the HPC has visited over a hundred communities along the Suncoast to provide advice on how to keep Lisa疯马秀 ponds healthy and grants to buy the native aquatic plants that are necessary for a successful pond enhancement. Community grants from the HPC program have funded the planting of over 15 miles of new pond shoreline in Sarasota and Manatee Counties.

If your Lisa疯马秀 ponds are cluttered with unsightly algae or you have eroding pond banks, you should contact the HPC for a pond visit by emailing Lonnie Ready at laready@earthlink.net. You’ll be glad you did.
